About Trig Instruments

In 2018 Trig Instruments celebrates it's 45th birthday. We are the longest established survey equipment supply company in New Zealand, with a long and proud tradition of offering the best products, prices, and service in the industry.

In 1964, Liverpool born Pete Kinsella responded to an advertisement in the UK Daily Telegraph for Instrument Makers to train in the Wild Heerbrugg (now renamed Leica) factory in Switzerland.  In 1967 Pete Kinsella and his wife Anne moved to New Zealand so he could establish a service department for the New Zealand Wild Heerbrugg agents 'Dental and Medical'.  In 1973 Pete left Dental and Medical and joined Geoff Hunter in Korokoro Wellington, to create 'Hunter Kinsella Instruments'. On the death of Geoff Hunter a few years later, Pete Kinsella closed the Korokoro office and moved in to the Wellington CBD, reopening as 'Trig Surveying Instrument Co.' in a small office in Oak Park House.

As the company grew, it slowly took over the whole ground floor of Oak Park House. In 1986 'Trig Surveying Instrument Co.' and Auckland based 'Geodetic Instruments' acquired the exclusive New Zealand agency for 'Topcon' surveying equipment.  In 1989 Kevin Stevens joined the company to train as a service technician, but over the next few years Kevin become involved with all aspects of the company's operation, including sales and marketing.

By 1995 Trig Instruments could no longer operate from Oak Park Avenue - running out of space and in a building that was flagged to be demolished to make way for Wellington’s long awaited motorway extension, the company moved to a new, custom built premises in Ngauranga, just north of the Wellington CBD.

On Pete Kinsella’s retirement in 2000, Kevin and his wife Liz purchased the company and Kevin took over the role of Managing Director. Since that time, the company has continued to grow, employing more staff and expanding it’s product range and services, prompting a name change to “Trig Instruments” to reflect the company no longer being just a 'surveying instrument supply', but now also dealing in products right throughout the survey, construction, and civil contracting industries too.

In 2016, Trig Instruments became the exclusive New Zealand distributor for Horizon Singapore's range of GNSS and Total Station survey instruments and from Norway, the DigPilot range of 2D and 3D machine control solutions. Offering a greater range of products, better support and training.
